Howard Russell Goodrich, Sr.

 June 22, 1930 to Feb. 9, 2014

Howard was born in Edgemere, MD., to Madison and Helen Goodrich.  He was born the same day as the Lindberg Baby and his Dad was picked  up by the State Police twice while on Route 40 going to PA., thinking Howard was that child.  Howard went to Ohio to his Grandmothers until the tragedy was over. His Dad also took him to his friend Mickey Vernon's, who played 1st base for Washington Senators.  He taught Howard to play 1st base, which he did, and he was very good at that.  He played until he was 45 years old.  He went in the U.S. Navy four months before his 17th birthday.  He had his Basic Training at Great Lakes and was assigned to the USS Little Rock at Providence, RI.  Howard said when he first saw the ship he was so impressed because the ship was so big.  The Navy had an exercise in the Atlantic, which included the USS Missouri, and Howard's ship won the "E" flag for that exercise.  Howard was a Gunners Mate.  One year later his ship was put out of commission, and Howard was transferred to the USS Nespleen, a tanker.  On one trip, Howard's ship was sent to North Pole to carry Jet Fuel, as this was the "Cold War" with Russia.  His ship was hit by an Ice Berg so they shut off the compartment, and the ship did not get back to port for 3 months.  That was "Operation Deep Freeze".  Howard came home on leave in Dec. 1951 and met future wife Jackie.  On March 1, 1952, Howard resigned the Navy and joined the Baltimore City Police Dept.  They married on August 22, 1953, and had four children:  Gerrie Lynn, Rusty Jr., Glenda Lee, and Gale Leslie.  Howard left the Baltimore City Police Dept. after eight years, and drove a tanker for Texaco.  When the Co. left for Virginia, Howard got a position with MD State Public Service Commission.  Howard retired in 1989.  Howard was a softball player, a golfer, a bowler (winning many trophies), and he loved his family.  Howard built his retirement home, when he was 50 years old, for he and his wife Jackie (Myra) on Sue Creek as he loved the Water.  Howard and Jackie also have four grandchildren:  Taylour and Kameron, in Oregon; Ryan (granddaughter), and Payton in Florida; and Collin and Tanner of White Marsh, MD.

Howard was a life member of the B.P.O. Elks of Essex Lodge #1866, a V.P. of the Middlesex Civic Assoc., an active member of his church, and after 20 years of leaving the Navy, Howard joined the Associations for both of his ships.  Howard loved the Navy, and being reconnected to his ships and ship mates brought him great joy.

Howard is gone but not forgotten...
